Our first burial
It would be fair to say, that Helen was a little apprehensive when she was asked to conduct our first burial service. Not only was it a first burial, but we had never worked with Bethany Funeral Home before and nor had we performed a funeral at the Denmark Cemetery. There was more … in the days leading up to the funeral, there was torrential rain and the forecast for the day was for strong winds and more rain. A back-up plan was in place - we could do a short graveside service, followed by the planned ceremony at the Denmark Country Club!
However, on the morning of the funeral, the sun peeked out, the wind moved gently through the stately trees that surrounded us and there was merely a mist of rain for a moment. A lovely 90 year old lady, who, among many roles in her life, was a magnificent steamstress and avid knitter, was being buried at the Denmark Cemetery. Her family, all donned one of her stunning jumpers she had made for them, recalled a woman who was brave; who was resilient; who was strong; who was always willing to turn her hand at new opportunity and who we will remember as the quiet matriarch of the family she treasured so deeply.
As the service concluded, the family had chosen to play Ed Sheeran’s Supermarket Flowers and Wendy Matthew’s Flowers on the Water - as the music echoed throughout the cemetery, the great grandchildren played nearby, whilst her children & grandchildren came together to mourn and reminesce a great life … and Helen left knowing that a burial in a magnificent 100+ year old cemetery was truly beautiful!
